Ouarzazate is all about the film industry. This is Morocco's "Ouallywood" so to speak, and since Morocco's weather and terrain is pretty good in mimicking the scenery of Middle Eastern countries, then plenty of films depicting such locales are filmed here. After all, Morocco's politics is considerably stable, and so film companies go here to film scenes that are set in Egypt, Tibet, and Jerusalem. So after checking out the kasbah, we also went to the Atlas Corporation Studios to check out the film sets that have been used in previous films that were shot here.
Look! We went to Tibet! No, I am just kidding. This is the set of Kundun, which, if I remember, was an awesome movie about the Dalai Lama. Unfortunately, I am not a big movie fan, and therefore I had difficulty recognizing the other movie sets. That being said, I still enjoyed being transported to other locales. It made me feel like I wasn't in Morocco at all.
And now we are in Egypt! I was told that this was the set for Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra. I don't know the movie.
The above photos show a random assortment of the other sets that we saw while we were visiting. It was a huge place! I am sure that movie fans would appreciate the place more than I did, but I have to say, even though I didn't connect much of what I saw to a particular movie, I still enjoyed the visit. Of course, perhaps if we had one of those faux guides accompanying our visit, then maybe we had some more information about the place, but then, sometimes in Morocco you just want to be left alone at times.
