Trains Here and There

I have had a chance to travel using trains here in Germany lately. And every time that happens, I am amazed at the train technology here. You know, one could hang out in Hauptbahnhof and see all these trains, going to various destinations, and just imagining how all these trains zoom to their destinations is just to some degree, romantic.

You see, just by boarding a train, one could reach another country in a few hours. Sure, I went to Poland and back a couple of weekends ago, just for 29 EUR. Then, I also went to Göttingen and back, and on the way back, my train originated from Basel, Switzerland. There is a night train to Paris. The Berlin-Warsaw train runs a few times a day.

I guess this is what I love about Europe. The connectivity. The efficiency. The streamlined train system. Amtrak is a far cry from the standards here in Europe. So whenever I ride the short-distance commuter trains and see an ICE zoom by, my brain goes into daydreaming mode, and see what cities I might be able to visit, just by riding this train.

  1. I love the French TGV, but it's so expensive now! My hometown, Nantes, is a two-hour TGV ride from Paris and I did the trip hundreds of times when I was a student. There is a train every hour or so, so convenient. But I used to pay about E20 back in 2001, and now it's often E50 or more one way!

    1. Zhu,

Ouch! Well, maybe you now have alternatives with the low-cost carriers!

  2. Obama has been talking about moving forward with rehabilitating Amtrak but I just don't know if that's going to move at a snail's pace.

Europe is definitely a different league where it comes to "connectivity" & "efficiency" - It just shows Europe's long love affair with trains go a long way!

    1. TNP,

At least it's Obama who won; I remember Romney saying he'd cut funding for Amtrak if he got elected. That being said, I do realize Obama has way more important priorities (like gun control and same-sex marriage) to push than Amtrak rehab.
