After spending the morning in a rather dark and depressive mood as a result of visiting the Documentation Centre, I decided to change the mood a little bit after lunch, and this time, visit the Neues Museum Nürnberg. This is a flashy museum for modern and contemporary art, located right in the middle of the Old Town.
I spent a couple of hours checking out its collection. Quite a few pieces were definitely eye-catching and thought-provoking.
Due to the pandemic, they had to adapt a few of their exhibits. Every visitor for example was given their personal headset, which could then be plugged on all the exhibits that featured sound. I thought that was an interesting set up. Things were quiet, overall, but in reality, there were plenty of soundscapes that visitors could enjoy.
There was a dark room with illuminated paper bags floating in mid-air. I didn't quite get the point of this artwork, but it was nevertheless interesting to look at.
There was a section of the museum that displayed some sexually-charged artwork. There was this lifesize horse made of milk, emerging from a dissected gigantic breast. There was this massive wall full of expressions using the word fuck. There was also this video of a woman and a baby, sliding through a very long chute, wet with water, yet the video was pink, and I couldn't help but think that this was a metaphor for the birth canal. There was a panel featuring naked men. And there was this white room with a framed picture of a woman's vagina, with a tarantula sitting on top.
There are plenty of other exhibits. Some of the exhibits were composed of these gigantic elements that somehow looked like features in a room. Plenty of these items didn't really have an obvious purpose or function, aside from giving the viewer the impression that someone had a massive dose of creativity and needed to apply it somewhere. There was one exhibit which pretty much looked like the scene from a backdoor dumpster, with trash, mice, and all. And other exhibits just made me scratch my head. Nevertheless, I must say, I enjoyed the experience.
With this, I am slowly wrapping up my visit to Nürnberg. I had another day left, so I have a few more posts. Stay tuned.
