The Buffalo Surprise

Last May, I was in Buffalo for a weekend. It was a surprise; not a lot of people knew I was there. And based on what happened, it seems that the trip was overall a success.

Looking Back: Year 2012

The Year 2012 is about to end. So even though the galaxies aligned, and plenty of people thought we're going to die, I am still here. This is my last post for the year. Let me review what has happened for the past year, as I have done so in 2010 and 2011.

Oh Buffalo: Albright–Knox Art Gallery

Buffalo has an art museum that I have visited twice before. However, I haven't taken photos inside, so I decided to make use of the Free First Fridays in the Albright–Knox Art Gallery recently. I brought my camera and took pictures. And since they specialize in modern art, I loved what I saw.

Escaping the Heat

A few weeks ago, the weather was so hot here in Buffalo. It seemed that we baked and baked, that we all decided to head out and find places that have air-conditioning. Later on, I learned that the heat wave that the United States experienced from late June to mid-July was the worst since 1956.

Oh Buffalo: Connecticut Street Armory

Back in October, when the National Trust for Historic Preservation had their conference here in Buffalo, there were plenty of places that were usually closed but opened its doors to the public. One of these places were the Connecticut Street Armory. I have to admit, but I never even knew this place existed until I saw the brochure for the event. And the good thing is, the tour was free.

Looking Back: Year 2011

While the weather was still fine, I decided to embark on a walking tour of downtown Buffalo. The thing is, this part of town isn't the prettiest, given how urban flight has deteriorated this place. However, if one knows where to look, there are still interesting places that are worth seeing. Needless to say, I brought my camera with me.

Once a year, there is an event in Buffalo where homeowners can actually opt to open up their properties and showcase the wonderful gardens that they have. This usually happens on a weekend, and for this year, Garden Walk Buffalo happened on July 30 and 31, 2011. Needless to say, I went ahead and brought my camera, hoping to see some things I usually do not see.

Oh Buffalo: Allentown Historic District

If I had the choice, I probably would want to live in this neighborhood. The Allentown Historic District is one of the prettiest and funkiest parts of Buffalo. Designated as a local preservation district in 1978, it was included in the National Registry of Historic Places in 1980.

When I went to the Japanese Garden the other day, I also crossed the street and went to Hoyt Lake. After all, Delaware Park is rather big, and there are plenty of different sections to it. Hoyt Lake is another one.

A few weeks ago, I decided to take a stroll around Symphony Circle. The weather was great, and I figured it would be a great way to explore the city. I've been in this area before, but most of the time, it was during the evening, and the surroundings are already dark. The reason is because Symphony Circle is where Kleinhans Music Hall is located, which is the home of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Oh Buffalo: St. Paul's Cathedral

For my latest entry in my Oh Buffalo! series, I am posting about St. Paul's Cathedral. This is a church that is located downtown, in a triangular lot, which actually makes things interesting, from an architectural point of view. This is the cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York, and not only that, it is also considered a US National Historic Landmark. It was built in 1851, and Richard Upjohn was the architect, who also handled the construction of Trinity Church in New York City. And as such, this church is also a church under the Gothic Revival style of architecture.

Preserving Buffalo

I have been living here in Buffalo for more than 6 years now. And only recently have I actually been putting an effort to get to know my city. You may have already seen the various different places that I have visited, and there's more. But for today, I have something else to talk about, and that is about preservation.
