Bumming Around the Balkans: The Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik has plenty of museums, but most of them are small ones that are only worth a short while. That being said, there are a few interesting ones, and so if you want to do something more than just explore the beach and the old town, I suggest going to one of these museums. I went to the Museum of Modern Art, which is a short walk from the Old City, on the road that hugs the mountains and the coast.

Dubrovnik is pretty much a city museum. Every twist and turn of the miniature limestone-paved streets brings the visitor to something interesting. So one day, when I was exploring this city, I stumbled across the Franciscan Monastery, which is a 14th-century cloister in the middle of the Old City.

As I said before, if you're visiting Dubrovnik, make sure to climb and circumnavigate the walls. It provides a great perspective of the Old City. Suddenly, you're on top, gazing on the rooftops of the buildings and houses inside.

When in Dubrovnik, one has to go and walk the walls and fortresses that surround the Old Town. I will post a blog entry about the walls in the near future, but for now, I want to focus on the rooftops. See, the walls provide a great panorama of the Old Town from various different perspectives. It gives you that view, seeing the multitudes of houses and other buildings, with red rooftop tiles, surrounded by the thick walls meant to protect the city from invaders.

The Old Town of Dubrovnik was the first thing I encountered during this visit. I stayed inside, well, the place I originally wanted to stay in was indeed inside the Old Town, but since that was closed for the season, I had to find an alternative. Thankfully, I did find an apartment that was still in the Old Town. So the next day, I spent the whole day outside exploring this compact historic city.

So, as I said before, I took another trip. This isn't a long trip, just a week, as well as the weekends that surrounded it. A total of 9 days (which got extended for another day due to fog). Last December, I went to Croatia as well as to Bosnia & Herzegovina, two countries of the former Yugoslavia. I visited three cities: Dubrovnik, Mostar, and Sarajevo.
