During the course of my career, I have met hundreds of people, who would come in to my lab, as they signed up to be volunteers for my experiment. In some settings, this was part of their curriculum (they were enrolled in Psych 101 and as a part of their class, they had to participate in a bunch of experiments). But in others, these were volunteers who say a flyer of mine, advertising that they would be paid a small amount if they agree to participate. I have been recruiting my participants this way for the past couple of years now, since I am not affiliated in a university at the moment. And most of the time, things go well, but sometimes, there are just people who think that I am stupid. These are people who sometimes can improve on their social skills, especially on politeness.

When Your Lab Participant is on Drugs (or seems to be, at least)
The other day, I had a participant who visited my lab, who acted quite weird. The sad thing is that I couldn't screen them whether they are high or not beforehand, so while most of my participants are good and therefore the data they contribute are usable, sometimes I just get weird participants who I have to deal with, pay, and yet remove from the study, as their data will be more or less corrupted and unusable.

How Not to Write a Short Story
I have been digging up materials I have used for some of the experiments I have conducted as part of my dissertation lately. There were topics I touched on in the dissertation that I still wanted to continue pursuing, as the dissertation still left some open questions. So several years later, I have revisited old backup files and old data from experiments I have conducted, yet haven't published yet. And this reminded me of a very amusing yet not-so-useful participant in an experiment of mine.

The Colloquium Learning Experience
As I mentioned in an earlier blog post, I recently visited Cologne to give a talk in the university. I was invited by some folks to give a colloquium talk in their department. And overall, while the talk was quite successful, there were also things that I could have done better. Nevertheless, it was a learning experience for me as well.

Linguists and their Data
I've thought for a while whether I would blog about this topic. But I guess in the end, I thought that I would rather write it down than just let it simmer in my head. Anyway, what I wanted to write about today has something to do with the relationship linguists have with their data. It's an interesting, and by no means, straight-forward one.

Academic Validation
So I recently attended a conference in Pisa. In this conference, there were several things that happened that made me feel like this perhaps is the best conference I have attended so far. Let me tell you why.
