Mullerthal Trail: Legs 11-13 - Mullerthal to Echternach via Hersberg and Scheidgen (25.3 km)

It's time to finish this trail. So I checked the weather forecast, and since subsequent days were predicted to be rainy, I went back to the trail where I stopped the day before to finish the Mullerthal Trail. My destination for the day is Echternach, where I started this trail a year ago.

Mullerthal Trail: Legs 9-10 - Larochette to Mullerthal via Beaufort (20.2 km)

I returned to Luxembourg because I wanted to finish what I started one year ago, the Mullerthal Trail. Last year, I covered the first 8 legs out of a total of thirteen. So I went back in the summer of 2022 to finish it. This time, I am covering legs 9 and 10 in one post. I didn't take too many pictures this time, since I've already seen the general scenery of the area from last year, not to mention that in some parts of my hike, it was also raining, and so it wasn't the easiest time to shoot a photo.

Aside from the military history museum, I also checked out another museum in Diekirch. I walked south and headed to the Musée Automobile in order to check out old vehicles.

After spending an entire day traveling with the train, not to mention some delays, the next day was raining. So it wasn't an ideal day to spend hiking. Hence, I decided to do some sight-seeing instead. This was a Sunday, and I took the train to Diekirch, in northeastern Luxembourg. Train travel within Luxembourg is free, so I simply hopped on a train, and after a short while, I found myself at the end of the line.

I am the type of person that finishes what I have started. So when I have started the Mullerthal Trail in Luxembourg last year, I definitely had it in mind to finish it at some point. So one year later, I came back to do exactly that.

Mullerthal Trail: Leg 8 - Blumenthal to Larochette (8.7 km)

As I mentioned in the earlier post, Blumenthal wasn't really a pit stop. I briefly passed just the edge of the village, before continuing further. Unlike other segments of the Mullerthal Trail, however, this segment wasn't particularly photogenic, as there aren't many jaw-dropping natural features along this segment.

My last hiking day was a Saturday. So I set off for the last time from Luxembourg to the trail head, which was Müllerthal. This place was slightly complicated to reach, but nevertheless it was doable. It involved taking two buses, connecting in a little village, but the transport connections worked as predicted.

On my last sight-seeing day, I headed southwest from Luxembourg to Esch-sur-Alzette. Esch-sur-Alzette is Luxembourg's second largest city, and is known for its steel industry. Nowadays, the steel industry has moved on, and the area is being redeveloped. Nowadays, there are university campus buildings alongside the old steel factories. But in any case, one can still visit the blast furnace, and that is what I decided to do that day.

Mullerthal Trail: Leg 6 - Berdorf to Müllerthal (6.4 km)

After a small break in the village of Berdorf, I went further. This day was definitely a very scenic and exciting one, as there are plenty of rocky formations and features that one can see in this section.

Mullerthal Trail: Leg 5 - Echternach to Berdorf (6.8 km)

On my third hiking day, I headed back to Echternach to pick up where I left. As I finished Route 1 during my first and second hiking days, it was time to tackle Route 2, and this takes me from Echternach to Müllerthal, via Berdorf. I picked up the trail by following it through Echternach's commercial street.

After spending the morning in the American Cemetery, I headed back to the city. This time, I went back to the Kirchberg plateau to check out a modern art museum, the Musée d'art moderne Grand-Duc Jean.

After my second hiking day, I made use of the following day to explore further areas in Luxembourg City. It's not my first time in Luxembourg, this is actually my third time to visit. Yet I realise that the first two visits only constrained me to a very small area of Luxembourg, and I definitely wanted to see more. So I ventured further out and checked out the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial.

Mullerthal Trail: Leg 4 - Herborn to Echternach (10.5 km)

After taking a small break in Herborn, I continued further. My goal for the end of the day is Echternach, which is where I started during my first hiking day. Once I complete this day, then this means I have completed Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail.

Mullerthal Trail: Leg 3 - Moersdorf to Herborn (9 km)

On my second hiking day, I was slightly worried of the weather. The forecast said that it would rain in the afternoon, so in order to avoid that, I tried my best to be on the trail head as early as possible. So by 8:00 AM, I was already in Moersdorf, picking up things where I left off two days earlier.

After exploring Vianden and its castle in the morning, I still had some time to use in the late afternoon. So upon arriving back from Vianden to Luxembourg, I took a brief rest in my hotel, and afterwards I took the tram from Gare Centrale all the way to the end, to Luxexpo. And from there, I just walked and traced my steps heading back to the city, while exploring the Kirchberg area.

The Château de Vianden is one of the largest fortified castles west of the Rhine. This structure started as a Romanesque castle in the 11th century, but eventually several other structures have been added. At some point, it fell into disrepair, but later on, it was rebuilt and is now open for visitors. So that's what I did that day, when I was climbing the hill from the bus station all the way to the entry of this place.

After spending a day hiking, the day after I decided to spend the day sightseeing. So I took the train to Ettelbruck and from there the bus to Vianden. I wanted to visit this town because of the pretty castle that is located above the town.

Mullerthal Trail: Leg 2 - Rosport to Moersdorf (10 km)

I continued further - the segments of the Mullerthal Trail are short enough that one can do two of them at the same day. So when I reached Rosport, I just took a little break when I found an inviting bench, and shortly afterward I pushed through.

Mullerthal Trail: Leg 1 - Echternach to Rosport (8.3 km)

One of the reasons why I chose Luxembourg as a destination for my week-long vacation was because there was an opportunity to do socially-distant activities, such as hiking, yet there are also cultural alternatives, such as sight-seeing. I was researching the area and found out that the northeastern corner of the country is a perfect place for hiking. There is the Mullerthal Trail, which is 112 kilometres altogether, forming three loops of almost 40 kilometres each. There is a classic way to do it, which is what I followed.

Earlier this month, I had a real vacation. After needing to cancel two vacation plans in October and November, a real vacation finally happened. I was able to leave Berlin and spend some time away from my home for a week. This time, I went to Luxembourg and spent a week. Amazing!
