On my third hiking day, I headed back to Echternach to pick up where I left. As I finished Route 1 during my first and second hiking days, it was time to tackle Route 2, and this takes me from Echternach to Müllerthal, via Berdorf. I picked up the trail by following it through Echternach's commercial street.
I suppose Echternach would make a good base for hiking activities, as plenty of trails start here. Yet I liked the convenience of living within a larger city, hence I based myself in Luxembourg instead. After all, the public transportation system is great in this country.
The trail immediately rises above the town of Echternach, so just after a few minutes of going through Echternach's shopping street, I am already huffing and puffing and perched above the town after a steep climb. There's this nice lookout that allows you to turn back and see what you have just done.
The trail then passes through the woods until you reach this area called Gorge du Loup. This is a steep crevice where apparently wolves found refuge in earlier times. Thankfully there were no wolves when I visited. But there were steep rocks and I had to climb up and down from them.
The next set of features this trail has are that rocks that make up the Labyrinthe, which forces you to go through this massive collection of boulders.
Then eventually you'll encounter this interesting bridge construction, at Chipkapass. It is wooden, and allows people to go through this crack in between rocks.
Finally, there is the main feature of this leg, the Huel Lee, a cave where regional mills were once quarried. And from there the village of Berdorf was not far away, where I took a little break before continuing further.
