Ein Volksfeind

Recently, I found myself once again in the Schaubühne, where I caught Thomas Ostermeier’s famous staging of Henrik Ibsen's Ein Volksfeind (An Enemy of the People). It is an incredible piece of theatre!

Hannah Zabrisky tritt nicht auf

I was back in the Schaubühne. This was not planned, yet as I realised that I had a free evening one day, and had nothing to do, I bought a ticket to see a production here, and it happened to be Hannah Zabrisky tritt nicht auf. As is typical with many productions in the Schaubühne, this was a fantastic one.

Salome

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine and I went to the Schaubühne to see Salome by Einar Schleef, based on the version by Oscar Wilde. I knew the biblical story, so more or less I knew what the plot was about. Hence, I was able to focus on the content and the staging. And I have to say, it was intense!

Die Nacht von Lissabon

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine and I went to the Gorki Theater to see this piece. I didn't have this in my radar per se, but as we were able to procure discounted tickets, we opted to see it. It turned out to be a very complex and fantastic piece!

Androgynous

One time I was looking for something to see one evening, and I stumbled upon this one. Androgynous. I was skeptical at first, given that this is happening at the Gorki Theatre, and knowing that the shows in the Gorki Theatre tend to be an experience that is sometimes not for the faint of heart, I was not very eager to see this one. However, somehow curiosity won, and I procured myself a ticket. And it turned out to be a great experience!

Die Marquise von O. und –

I watched this production in the Deutsches Theater recently. I haven't been to this theatre house before, and as I was looking for something to do one week, I stumbled upon this production, which turned out to be a fascinating one.

The Lady from the Sea

I was in London recently, and while I was there, I saw this production. It was fantastic!

Prozess

After a 6-year hiatus, I found myself again in the Maxim Gorki Theater. I sort of avoided this place given that I knew they tend to produce daring and confrontational pieces. And the last time I was here in 2019, it was such a daring piece that perhaps I was rather scared to come back. In any case, I found myself again here, and once again, seeing a production that was related to Franz Kafka. This time I watched Prozess.

Tournament

As I try to venture out and check out different forms of theatrical arts, I decided to check out a dance performance. Back in August, there is the yearly dance festival Tanz im August series that happens in Berlin, and I decided to check out one performance in this festival. I saw Tournament, a production by choreographer Adam Linder and composer Ethan Braun. This was actually fascinating.

Glaube, Geld, Krieg und Liebe

Oh, what a fantastic production! I have to say, this piece is 5 hours long, but it is perhaps one of the best, if not the best, theatre pieces I have seen!

Phädra, in Flammen

I don't know much about Phaedra. Apparently, in Greek mythology, she was a Cretan princess, and was the wife of Theseus, the hero who slayed the Minotaur and founded Athens. In any case, I saw that this play was being produced in the Berliner Ensemble, so one day, when I wanted to do something but had nothing planned, I bought a ticket.

Oh, this was a complicated piece!

Borgia

In my quest to deepen my knowledge of the musical and theatrical arts, I watched a ballet performance for the first time. I went all the way to Magdeburg to see a performance of Borgia by Jörg Mannes, using music by Henryk Górecki, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Philip Glass. And I realise I don't know how to talk about dance!

Leben des Galilei

On the last weekend of March, I somehow had the chance to attend a play in the Hans Otto Theater, in Potsdam. I've been trying to discover new venues in and around Berlin, and so at some point I wanted to check this place out. It was a short train ride from Berlin, and therefore was definitely doable. I attended a production of Leben des Galilei by Bertold Brecht.

My gosh, this was perhaps one of the most amazing theatre pieces I have seen in a while!

Die Affäre Rue de Lourcine

It's been more than a year since I was in the Schaubühne, so when I saw that there was a weekend and I would be on my own, I checked out what was showing and bought myself a ticket for a surrealist comedy, Die Affäre Rue de Lourcine by Eugène Labiche. Actually, I never heard of this playwright before, but in any case, the trailer was interesting and so I decided to get a ticket and watch it.

Long Day's Journey into Night

I was in London earlier this year. And I took the chance to watch some English-language theatre. I browsed the offerings and ended up settling on getting a ticket for Eugene O'Neill's magnum opus. London's theatre scene is full of musicals, and since I wanted a play and not a musical, I had to sift a bit. But in any case, I had a great time!

POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive

I was visiting family in Los Angeles earlier this year, and so I took the opportunity to see English-language theatre. The last time I attended one was two years ago, so I returned back to the Geffen Playhouse to see a production of POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive, by Selina Fillinger. I have to say, this was a hilarious piece, and kept me laughing the whole night.

Nachtland

In the beginning of May, I found myself in the Schaubühne yet again, this time to watch Nachtland by Marius von Meyenburg. This piece was a tragicomedy which touches on the delicate topic about the German attitudes towards Jews, the collective historical guilt, and anti-Semitism. And as expected, it was a fantastic show!

Kindheitsarchive

On the end of March, I went back to the Schaubühne to watch a very interesting and intriguing piece, Kindheitsarchive by Caroline Guiela Nguyen. As expected, it was a fantastic show!
