The Wawel Castle is located south of the main square of Kraków. It is located on a hill, and is definitely a highlight of anyone's visit to the city. It contains several buildings that are built in various styles as they reflect the styles that were common during the time they were built. Nowadays, the various buildings contain several different museums, but because we didn't want to get overwhelmed, we only visited one such museum. This post however would concentrate on the outside views.
We approached the castle by walking along the road that wraps around it. It is essentially a long ramp, and as you reach the end, one eventually sees the river that goes through the city. The castle, as it is located on a hill, actually has very good views of the surroundings.
The walls are massive and formidable. Not only do they appear thick, as you can see in the photos above, but there are also strategically positioned towers, allowing the castle to see what is coming from afar.
There is the set of buildings that greet visitors as they reach the Italian-style courtyard. These set of buildings is where one can buy tickets for the various museums within the castle complex. There's also a restaurant where one can take a break and eat something.
I really liked this view, as one sees the Cathedral and its surrounding additional buildings. The composition is just very eye-catching I must say.
We did check out the cathedral, and yes, it was a very magnificent place inside. Unfortunately, pictures were not allowed.
We checked out one museum within the castle complex, and that is the tapestry collection. I will devote another post for that. There were many other exhibits within the castle but since we didn't want to be overloaded with museums, we opted not to check them out.
