Prancing Around in Poland: Remah Synagogue and Cemetery
There are a few synagogues in the Kazimierz district. So after checking out the Old Synagogue which is now a museum, we decided to visit the Remah Synagogue, which is one of the two still-functioning synagogues in the area.
Because it was a still-functioning synagogue, we needed to wear some headgear when entering. And when we went in, there were actually two religious people praying, which was an interesting thing to watch.
This synagogue was built in the 16th century, and is the smallest synagogue in the area. The name of the synagogue apparently stems from the name of Rabbi Moses Isserles, whose Hebrew acronym for his name was Remah.
The adjacent Remah Cemetery was something we also explored. Several important figures of the Jewish community are buried here. The cemetery has been vandalised by Nazi Germany, but has undergone post-war restorations.
