Before I wrap up this travelogue series, let me write about the food I ate while I spent a week in Bavaria. Bavaria isn't known to be a foodie's destination, nevertheless I must say I ate well while I was there.
I stayed in Nürnberg, which was where I had the most encounters with food. Yet I also did daytrips to several other locations within the state, and so I also had the chance to try out a few other restaurants in other locations.
I arrived in Nürnberg on a Friday evening, and it was late. Thankfully though, my train was on time, and I reached my hotel and was able to check in quick enough before all the restaurants closed. I had a place in mind, and so I headed there once I checked in. I went to
994 Ginza, which is a few minutes north from where my hotel was by foot. I got myself some izakaya food, which was a nice respite after a few hours of travelling. I got a refreshing drink, a small miso soup, a chicken karaage, and a very tasty slice of octopus.
The next Sunday, before I did a daytrip to Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, I had breakfast in
Cafe Egg. I chose the Spanish omelette, which came with several other breakfast goodies. I also had a cup of very good coffee with it.
That evening, I wanted to get some very good Franconian food, so I headed to nearby Fürth. I made a reservation in the
Schilderwach Weinstube. I got myself a very good glass of red wine, as well as a creamy Franconian soup, followed by a Lammschäufele. It was definitely very traditional.
The next evening, I wanted something different, so I opted for Vietnamese this time. I went to
Tay Ho, a restaurant on the northern side of Nürnberg. I got myself a kick-ass papaya salad, as well as a dish consisting of rice noodles and beef. That was very tasty and filling as well.
When I did a day trip to Regensburg, I decided to have a light lunch in a French restaurant this time. There's a brasserie in the Old Town,
Restaurant Orphée. I must say, the atmosphere definitely felt like I was more in Paris than in Regensburg. I opted for the traditional French onion soup, and I followed that with a terrine plate. It wasn't a heavy lunch, and it was perfectly what I needed for that day.
And that evening, I opted for more tradition, so I headed to one of the oldest restaurants in the Old Town of Nürnberg. I headed to
Goldenes Posthorn, and got myself some beer and a delicious plate of traditional Franconian meat. I actually have been to this place a year ago when I was in Nürnberg for the first time.
The next evening, I opted for a more modern dinner, so I made a reservation in
Globo Restaurant. This is a modern European restaurant, and I went all the way, first with a cocktail aperitif, followed by two courses that I even paired with two different types of wine. I ended my meal with a very nice coffee.
The day after, I headed over to Dinkelsbühl and spent the day checking out the Old Town. For lunch, I found myself in
Weib's Brauhaus. Of course, it is a brewery, so I opted for the local brew. I also got one of those pots with lots of various stuff in it, for lunch.
And that evening, I tried finding more international cuisine, so I headed to
Seoul Kitchen in the northern side of Nürnberg. I got myself a very good dolsot bibimbap. I asked if they had dolsot yukhae bibimbap, but alas, this is Germany after all, and edgy items like raw beef is a little hard to offer to locals.
The next day, I did a day trip to Ingolstadt, and during that time, at some point I found myself in a nice cafe,
Cafe Mundgerecht. I ordered a very delicious slice of cake, as well as a cup of strong coffee.
And that evening, I found one of the most interesting restaurants in Nürnberg,
Boogie's BBQ Smokehouse. It's a totally legit Memphis-style smokehouse, and yes, the meat was absolutely tasty. One will use their hands here, so there's plenty of paper towels. It's funny that I have spent several years living in the USA yet I haven't been to a smokehouse at all back there. The first smokehouse I would encounter would actually be in Germany.
On my last evening, I went to Nürnberg's Old Town and got a table in
Kokoro. This is a Japanese restaurant, but it's definitely not the traditional type. I got myself some small plate to nibble on, as well as a seafood bowl.
Finally, on my last day, before I took the train back to Berlin, I visited an Italian cafe and patisserie,
Paradiso dei Dolci. I got myself a strong coffee as well as a juicy piece of rum baba. That was very tasty!
So this wraps up my week-long visit to Bavaria. I headed here to hike, but I must say, I also encountered very tasty items to eat!
