Dublin actually has two cathedrals. The Christ Church Cathedral is the older one of them, as it was found in the 11th century. It was rebuilt in the 12th century, and significantly enlarged in the 13th century. And in the 21st century, during one long weekend, I visited it.
This Gothic and Romanesque church is not the largest church I have seen, but nevertheless this one is quite magnificent. It has all the features of a Gothic church, though unfortunately, I am not an architecture expert and so I can't really explain it in technical terms. So let me just show it to you in pictures.
The exterior is very stony. After all, this is a Gothic church, so it is the prevailing style. If one imagines gargoyles, then it would fit perfectly with this facade.
I spent some time taking photos of the interior. While I was visiting, there was a photography class that was taking very professional looking photos. I on the other hand was an amateur just sneaking in with my little point-and-shoot. In any case, the interior was interesting, with its stained-glass windows and massive pipe organ.
Underneath the main floor, there is the crypt. It has a small exhibit, with statues, treasures, and graves. I am told that this crypt is the largest in Britain or Ireland.
After about half an hour, I slowly made my way out. It was time to meet up with my friend.
