Cavorting in California: Getty Villa
We still had one full week ahead of us after visiting San Diego. While we didn't spend every day sight-seeing, we did check out a few highlights of the Los Angeles area. One of these is the Getty Villa. It is located in Pacific Palisades, which is quite a bit of a drive from where we were in San Pedro, but otherwise it was a very interesting place to visit.
The Getty Villa is essentially an archaeological museum that is housed in a Roman villa. I suppose if one has a lot of money, then one builds a Roman villa. If one visits, one could see plenty of ancient Greek, Roman, and Etruscan artifacts.
This is a very opulent Roman villa. It is well-designed, there are several gardens that are inter-connected, and there are pools and a few other water features that make it very pleasant to the eye. It's a very idyllic place, if not for the occasional crowd that would invade your selfie.
There are plenty to see. When we visited, there was a temporary exhibition on the Assyrian Empire. I saw stones featuring Assyrian motifs, shown above. I must say, there was plenty to learn here.
The collection is massive, and features representatives from the various major civilisations in Western Asia. I think we spent more than two hours here, and given that the entry is actually free, it is actually a very easy way to get educated about historical events and learn about the past.
