The final thing we checked out before leaving San Diego and driving back to Los Angeles was the San Diego Museum of Art. We wanted to explore at least one museum in Balboa Park, so we decided to be culture snobs and visit this one. It turned out to be a very interesting experience!
This museum is said to be the region's oldest and largest art museum, and focuses on Spanish art. They also have a considerable contemporary art section, which I found extremely interesting.
They had a section dedicated to art during the Covid period: these are works produced by local artists just recently, during the Covid pandemic. I found these pieces very interesting, and focused on themes such as loneliness and hopelessness.
Aside from temporary exhibitions, the general collection has a relatively wide span, ranging from 5000 BC to the present day. It was definitely a very captivating collection, with items from Hieronymus Bosch, Jose Agustin Arrieta, and many others. It was a great way to broaden one's art knowledge, I must say.
After spending about an hour here, we slowly made our way to the parking lot, and headed back to Los Angeles. It was a very interesting three night stay in San Diego, and we enjoyed it immensely. There's plenty to see, so it's definitely possible to imagine visiting again.
