Natale a Napoli: Castel Sant'Elmo

Naples has several fortresses. One is not enough it seems. So when we were there, we visited a couple of them. The first one was the Castel Sant'Elmo, located on Vomero Hill.

Naples is not flat. In fact, there are several hills that make navigating the city a little bit tricky. You see these hills sprouting out of nowhere, and there are funiculars bringing people up and down. On one of these hills, there is the Castel Sant'Elmo, which is open to the public.
We climbed the fortress, and as we went up, I couldn't help but notice the very thick walls. There seems to have been an earlier structure on this site back in 1200, but the current structure actually dates from 1537.
In the recent past, it has been a property of the military until its restoration. Nowadays, it is open to visitors, and if you climb up, you can see fantastic views of the city. Check out the photos I have taken from the rooftop!

After a bit of meandering, we slowly made our way down, amazed at the view.
