Of course, we went to Pompeii. It's after all very close by from Naples, as it's just a short train ride away. We went there during one of the sunny days, as it was perfect for a day trip.
Pompeii was an ancient city, near Naples, and it is famous for being buried under thick volcanic ash and pumice when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. I've read about this event several times in the past as a student, and now I am here!
Pompeii is a huge site, after all, it was an ancient city. There are very interesting remnants of Roman life which can be evident to modern-day visitors. We started from the main entrance, and slowly made our way to the city's central plaza, as you can see in photos above.
The residents of Pompeii had massive villas: we explored several of these villas, which typically had these interior courtyards and several rooms surrounding it. The roads are also interesting, as it seems to be intended as a sewer of sorts, with waste flowing in the middle, while people walked on the sides.
The city also had entertainment venues. The theatre was particularly impressive, and I could imagine what kinds of shows were portrayed here back then.
This ancient city had plenty of amenities, and we spent the entire morning and a big part of the afternoon exploring them. At some point, we also saw the bodies coated in plaster, crouched in the final moments of their life. Overall, it was a very moving site, and is something that is definitely worth seeing.
