Book Review: Auf ein Bier bleibe ich noch by Lennart Adam

I actually liked this book. It's a travelogue, but not the traditional kind. See, the author likes bars. He thinks that bars are the best places to get to know a place one is visiting. Perhaps that is true, but due to the fact that I am not really a huge fan of alcohol, not to mention that I am an introvert and therefore talking to strangers in a strange place isn't really my thing, I do not feel like testing this hypothesis. Nevertheless, it is interesting to read about the author's various vignettes of conversations that have happened in various bars around the world.

I like the diversity of this book: there are bar stories from places as far as the South Pacific, or in the middle of Africa. Reading this essentially drops the reader right in the middle of some unknown land, at times with bizarre surroundings. And the author nevertheless navigates the situation with finesse and humour.

I have to say that I am glad to have picked up this book. I can imagine that my personality is the total opposite of the author's yet in any case, it was still great to read about someone else's experiences in situations that I probably would never end up in. I mean, the author found a guesthouse in Morocco and he enjoyed it so much he never left until he absolutely had to - I don't think I'd do such a thing like that given my personality. But reading about these situations is nevertheless eye-opening, since after all, there are multiple ways of living. One's way is not the only way. I give this 4 out of 5 stars.
