Eventually, I moved on from Punta del Este. I bought a bus ticket heading to Montevideo, and a couple of hours later, I was in Tres Cruces Bus Terminal in the Uruguayan capital. It is a big city, but nothing that I couldn't handle. I took an Uber to take me from the bus terminal to my hotel. I checked in, and after putting my belongings down, I explored the Old Town. The first thing that I stumbled upon was the Casa Rivera.
The Casa Rivera is a mansion in the Old Town, which is now functioning as a museum. Entrance is free, as seems to be the case in most of the city's museums. This place is not necessarily large, but it contains quite a few interesting historical artifacts.
There are plenty of things to see, such as massive paintings depicting historical events, exhibits about historical ways of resolving disputes, e.g., through duels, and old silverware and chinaware. What was most interesting for me however was the geographical evolution of the city, as evidenced by the various maps that were on display.
Montevideo is a relatively quiet city, and there aren't really big must-see sights, but this one was a small charming gem in the middle of the Old Town. Check it out if you are passing by.
