I suppose I end up visiting the major church every time I am in a city for the first time. It's just standard, perhaps, given that I have visited the main church of every Latin American city I have been to. Montevideo is no different, as I stumbled upon the Metropolitan Cathedral while I was spending a few days in the Uruguayan capital.
The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in Constitution Square. This is not the most prominent square of the city, but rather it is the leafy square that is slightly hidden in the Old Town. I was passing by this area and decided to enter the church, which was open to the public, as expected.
As with Montevideo in general, the church is not the largest nor the most spectacular. It doesn't come as in-your-face, but nevertheless, for those religious visitors, it serves its purpose. There is a major altar, as well as several side altars. The sculpture is impressive. But for the most part, it is a quiet affair. It is not touristy, which is again how I perceive the entire capital.
If anything, it's a great place to be left alone, enjoying peace and solitude in a quiet building. If you need a break from walking all over the city, then checking out this church can do the trick.
