Cavorting by the Rivers: Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales

As Montevideo is Uruguay's only large major city, I wanted to check out what cultural offerings it has. So I checked out the National Museum of Visual Arts. Uruguayan fine art is something of a black hole to me, so I wanted to see what it is about.

This museum is located further east, away from the Old Town, where I was staying close by. So this was a good reason to take a long walk alongside the waterfront. And after almost an hour, I reached my destination.

I liked this museum. The works on display ranged from those produced from the mid- to late 1800s all the way to the present day. I have to say that I didn't know any of the artists that had their works displayed in the museum, but I suppose this is the point of the visit. I knew there would be interesting Uruguayan artists, but given where I live, my background, and the exposure I have had so far, these Uruguayan artists were largely unknown to me. I am glad to have had a little opportunity to see what art this country has.
