Now that I have a powerful passport, I can jump across borders with relative ease, compared to when I was still a Filipino citizen. This became rather handy when I was in Puerto Iguazú. While here, I was crossing international borders on a daily basis. So one day, I actually crossed over to Brazil to visit the Itaipu Dam.
The Itaipu Dam is the third largest hydroelectric dam in the world. And it's an engineering wonder. The funny thing is that I actually didn't know this place existed until my father-in-law (who is an engineer) told me about it. So I factored it in my itinerary, and made it a point to visit it. And I must say, it's huge!
I booked a tour to visit this place. Basically, there was a car that picked me up from my hotel in Puerto Iguazú, who took me across the border to the dam's Visitor Centre. And from there, there were tours that the management conducted. I rode a bus within the compound, which showed how large the whole project was. And not only that, I also saw funny animals, like capybaras!
I saw very large machines, and it's a very funny feeling passing by those things. It makes one feel very small. In any case, I learned a lot about how the whole thing was built, which was definitely an engineering wonder.
I didn't do the tour that actually visited the interior of the dam, but perhaps if I find myself in the area another time, I would consider it.
