After spending some time in the northeastern part of the country, I eventually made my way back to Buenos Aires. After all, I had a limited amount of time in the country, and my flight back home was departing from the capital. So I flew from Resistencia to Buenos Aires to spend the final days I had. And the first thing I checked out when I arrived was the city's Metropolitan Cathedral.
This is the main Catholic church in the city, but unlike other Latin American cities, the primary Catholic cathedral isn't the most eye-catching. I almost missed it, to be honest, when I was trying to find where it is. I was looking for a building that I thought would look like a typical cathedral, yet this one wasn't it. Rather, it looked more like a Roman temple, with a relatively subdued facade, and no tall bell tower.
That said, the interior was stunning. It has all the features of a church, and definitely something that looks like a house of worship.
What I found unusual was that the cathedral also housed the mausoleum of General San MartÃn. He was an Argentine general and is considered to be the liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru. Guards are standing by the mausoleum, and visiting this little room on the right side of the cathedral is a rather solemn affair. I saw a few school children checking it out, but I waited until after they left to snap the photos I have above.
Overall, this was an interesting church, with an attached mausoleum. It doesn't look like a church from the outside, but the interior is definitely a cathedral.
