After landing in Málaga, we picked up a rental car, and drove to Almería. By the time we reached our hotel, it was already dark, and so we just chilled out for a bit before heading out to find dinner. But the next day, we explored our surroundings. And the first thing we did was check out the Alcazaba of Almería.
The Alcazaba is a fortified complex. It's essentially a castle, a fortress. And this hilltop fortress was built around 955. And it's still standing today.
We walked across the Old Town and slowly ascended. From the bottom, it looked rather formidable. It's definitely a structure meant for defense. Entrance was free, so after passing the front door, we just walked up and climbed the ramp.
There were plenty of towers. I suppose one would expect that in a fortress. There's definitely plenty of those towering structures where one watchman can perch himself up and watch for incoming threats.
Inside, we first checked out the walls. I mean, the views over the walls were awesome. So we surveyed the perimeter for a bit and saw the land extending beyond.
And then we explored the interior. There were gardens, archaeological areas, and other areas that have been now repurposed for something else. In any case, it's a cool place overall to check out.
After meandering for a bit, we slowly made our way down. This would be the first of several fortresses that we would be visiting during this trip.
