The book is less than 80 pages long. It's narrating the story of a bunch of Arab immigrants in Brazil, where there is this seemingly ugly woman, who needs to get married. At least that's the opinion of her parents. Getting married, after all, is good for business. If you have a business, and you have a daughter, then your future son-in-law can be the heir of your business. At least that's the idea. But if your daughter is the ugliest woman in the planet, then you'll have a little bit of a problem finding a suitable son-in-law.
Yes, that's the premise. There are the Arab immigrants to Bahia, and while they have an interesting social network going on, there's plenty of politicking happening under the table too, and how they are trying to find a suitor for the ugliest woman in a remote village is also hilarious to some extent. But really, overall, I thought there were too many things going on, and I got lost keeping track on who is who in the story, given that many names sounded the same. Heck, I am not Arab, so the various Arab names don't sound too distinct to my ears, at least.
So yeah, it was a quick read, but I felt like I wanted a bit more space to actually digest what a book wants to offer. This one didn't give me that space. It just went in front of me in lightning speed, and by the time I started to have a concrete idea what exactly is happening in the book, it was all over. It felt like it just went vroom vroom! And I didn't even have a clue what just happened.
I give this book 3 out of 5 stars. Try to catch it if you can.
