As I was in Passau, I wanted to check out the Veste Oberhaus. After all, it's a great sight that offers panoramic views of the city. This also means though that there is a massive climb required in order to get there. But, why not? I was on holiday after all. So I headed from the Old Town and did the thirty-minute walk to the top.
The Veste Oberhaus is a fortress that was founded in 1219. It was essentially the stronghold of the Bishop of Passau. Nowadays, it is a museum. There is also a youth hostel, as well as a restaurant. Though I have to say, I didn't see the hostel and restaurant in operation, at least when I visited it looked rather quiet.
After a relatively tough climb, I reached the courtyard. It was a rather serene place, and I found a bench to sit back for a bit to relax. And then I went to the ticket office, where I was asked whether I came up by foot or via the bus shuttle. Wow, I didn't realise there was a bus shuttle! I should have taken that instead. Oh well.
The interior is a museum, as I said earlier. So there were plenty of artefacts and other exhibits one can view. In any case, for me I liked seeing the interior of these places more from an architectural perspective, as it shows how people designed interior spaces back then, which was always interesting to explore.
However I have to say that the exterior views of the place was awesome too. In particular, I liked how one can clearly see how the three rivers in the area meet together. In one of the photos I have above, you can clearly see how the three rivers and their three different colours were all mixing at some point.
Eventually, I started retracing my steps, and headed down. I went to the courtyard one last time, and slowly made my way to the exit.
Overall, this was a good visit, but next time, try to catch the shuttle bus!
