I saw a funny scene in a hotel a few weeks ago. It involved a White man being put into his place.
See, I was staying in this hotel, and one morning, I went down for breakfast. It seems that Asians like to have breakfast early, since breakfast in this hotel opens at 7:00 AM, and when I came down at 7:15, there was a rather long queue waiting to get to the breakfast hall. Upon close observation, the queue consisted mostly of Vietnamese and Chinese tourists. I was travelling on business, yet for the most part, I managed to blend in nicely.
And then there was this tall White man, who seemed to be blind, at least, because he just ignored the very long queue and just waltzed into the breakfast hall. But oops! He was caught. And the entire queue saw the scene unfolding in front of them.
The interesting thing is, he was caught by this Black staff, who was checking everyone's room number, and comparing it against the list that she was holding in her hands. She sent the White man all the way back to the end of the queue. I suppose if the White man were a dog, he would be sulking with his tail in between his legs.
Sometimes I think the Colonial Period hasn't ended yet. It's these little episodes that reassure me that there is some sort of justice in society.
