Recently, I learned something that initially was surprising, but eventually upon further thought, was not exactly surprising, but nevertheless disturbing. I learned recently that someone I work with denies climate change.
The topic of climate change doesn't really come up at work too much, but one time, it did. And it just baffled me, that someone still doesn't believe that climate change is a thing. I would have expected that there's enough scientific evidence to convince people that the climate isn't what it used to be. However, it turns out that no, some people still don't think that climate change is a thing. For some people, the massive floods (that are scientifically explained as our atmosphere having too much moisture due to warmer climate) are just due to the "fact" that there are people who do things like cloud seeding. Hence we get too much rain.
Oh jeez.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. There are intelligent people, and there are those who aren't. And I suppose given my assumptions of these people's relative lack of intelligence, I shouldn't be surprised if they think that life on earth is still as it was back then, all hunky-dory. In the meantime, here I am thinking what my life would be when I am old, whether I would be a climate refugee.
The thing is, I find it hard to take these people seriously. And it's worse if you need to work with them on a regular basis.
Oh well. Not everyone is perfect, of course. I suppose I just need to polish my avoidance skills.
