This was my final hiking day during this trip. Fortunately, the weather was fine, and so for the last time, I headed to Mainz Hbf to take the RB26 regional train, which took me to Oberwesel.
One significant aspect of this leg is that there's a rather difficult section which is said to have Alpine characteristics. This is the section called Oelsbergsteig. I was wondering how to do it, and even read reviews of the section, to determine whether I would be able to do it alone or not. It would be at the beginning of this leg, and so I was slightly looking forward to it.
The beginning of this leg goes next to the old castle walls, and so I saw impressive ruins of walls and towers. Eventually, I reached the end of the village, with the interesting church. I eventually left that behind.
And then it was time for the Oelsbergsteig. However, I saw signs that there was a landslide, and that the path was closed. So in the end I didn't take it, and took a parallel alternative path instead, which involved a relatively steep but non-Alpine ascent via vineyards, passing through interesting sculptures in the middle of wide meadows.
And eventually I reached Sankt Goar, my final destination for this leg, as well as for this hiking trip. It was a village that appeared eventually after the Rhine turning several times, and I have to say the scenery was definitely beautiful. It was spectacular to be on the top of this gorge and see the river turning, flowing smoothly.
Eventually, I made my way back to the train station. As usual, there was a RB 26 that arrived after a short while, which took me back to Mainz.
