So we went back to Shanghai, and this time, we stayed in a different neighbourhood. It is great to explore different parts of a new city after all. And in the same vein, we also explored a new neighbourhood for us, the Hongkou District, where 1933 Old Millfun is located.
So what is 1933 Old Millfun? This used to be the largest slaughterhouse of Shanghai. Nowadays, it's a great architectural gem, and I am glad that it has been refurbished after years of being abandoned. Due to the fact that this was a slaughterhouse, there are design features that would only make sense if you think there are not only humans but also animals who had to wander through these structures.
We reached this place after a short walk from the nearest metro station. What I found most impressive was the exposed staircases. Nowadays, it is a building that houses several shops and restaurants, as well as some offices. But just imagine the old times when cattle needed to go through these walkways. Hence, there were walkways that were sloping, as well as staircases that were rather narrow, so that animals could not get through.
We spent some time wandering along these lanes, starting from the topmost level. And slowly we went down. And when we were done, and back at the ground floor, we headed back to the metro station to go somewhere else.
