Interludes from the Rheinburgenweg: Burg Rheinfels

The last castle I have seen on my last hiking day was Burg Rheinfels. This castle is located in Sankt Goar, the last town I saw on the Rheinburgenweg.

I actually saw this castle as the very final thing I checked out during my hike. I finished the hike in Sankt Goar, and I could have just continued to the train station to head back to Mainz, but instead I decided to first check out this castle before heading back. After all, I figured since I had the time now, why would I postpone this castle for later, when I don't even know when I would be back in this area? So I decided to walk to the other side of Sankt Goar (the train station was very close to the end of the hiking trail), check out this castle, and then head back to Mainz.
A big part of the castle is now a hotel. Nevertheless, there is an area that can be visited by people not staying in the hotel. The courtyard is actually quite a nice place, with charming structures and interesting buildings. Part of it is a parking lot, and there is also a small cafe. The hotel entrance is slightly fancy, but I also immediately found the entrance to the castle grounds.
I explored the castle grounds, and I have to say, the majority of it is in ruins. But that is okay, as not every castle has been restored, and so there are just castles in various stages of decay.
There is a tower, and this one I climbed. It provided fantastic views of the surrounding areas, including the river.

Eventually I made my way back to the entrance, and slowly headed towards the train station. Sankt Goar was my last stop in my hike, and I would continue this hike from this town onwards, in the future, whenever that might be. We'll see.
