Perhaps it is a common activity to go upwards whenever one is sightseeing. One wants to go to a summit to see the lay of the land, after all. So when we were in Athens, we climbed up Lycabettus Hill, which is the tallest hill in the Athens metropolitan area.
There is a funicular, which we utilised. It departs every 30 minutes, so we bought round-trip tickets, bringing us to the top.
I remember climbing this hill also back in 2005. Or rather, I saw old photos of myself on top of this hill, taken from 2005. To be honest, I don't remember the details of this previous visit, if not for the fact that these old photos help me refresh my memories. In any case, I thought it was worth climbing this hill a second time, and sure enough, the panoramic views were still spectacular.
I didn't realise how white the Athens cityscape is. I suppose they don't use much variety when it comes to paints on buildings. Or perhaps it is because of the hot weather, and white (or its variations) tends to be the best colour to deal with the heat. In any case, as the photos above indicate, this is the dominant colour of the city.
Eventually, we made our way back down. It was a fantastic view, but it was also time to move on and explore something else.
