Yes, we also went to the ancient stadium in Athens. I definitely remember being here back in 2005, yet for some reason, I don't think we went inside. All the photos I have from that first visit were taken from the outside. So this time, we went in.
The Panathenaic Stadium is an ancient stadium, built back in the 6th century BC, originally as a racecourse. It is actually the only stadium in the world that is entirely built of marble. And yes, this means it's slightly tricky to actually go in and climb these staircases, and actually sit down. It's marble, and it can be slippery, not to mention that the heights of the steps can be rather steep.
Surprisingly, there were many features, and with the aid of a booklet, as well as an audioguide, we checked them out. There are the special seats, located on prime areas of the stadium. There are the statues, and there is also an underground area leading to another building, which houses an exhibit on the Olympics. And speaking of the Olympics, this stadium was renovated in 1896, to hold the first modern episode of the international sportic event that everyone knows nowadays.
We spent some time exploring this place, and afterwards, we slowly headed out, moving on.
