Upon returning to Athens, we wanted to visit the Acropolis Museum. Given that we visited the Acropolis the other day, we wanted to check out this museum as well to learn more about the site, as well as the artefacts that are found within.
Back when I visited Athens in 2005, there was an Acropolis Museum, but it was small, and it was located right next to the Parthenon. Nowadays, the museum is located in a separate building, which is nearby, and has way more space to display the artefacts that are found in this place.
There were plenty of things on display. But I was selective, and didn't actually view each item, else I would have museum fatigue. I just looked at the items that I thought were visually interesting.
Of course, the original Caryatids are here: the ones found outside on the Acropolis are just copies, and these are the originals.
I also learned a lot about the sculpture that once adorned the sides of the Parthenon. This is actually very elaborate and so watching the explanatory video was definitely worthwhile. Unfortunately, these were damaged later on, as Greek culture went out of fashion, and people who came later decided that it was better to destroy or vandalise these things.
In any case, we learned a lot in this visit, and after a couple of hours, we slowly made our way back out.
