Earlier this year, from the middle of May to the middle of June, I took a long three-and-a-half week vacation. I flew to South America and visited new countries! I increased my country count by visiting Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil. And it was fun!
I procured a multi-city flight ticket, consisting of a flight from Berlin via Madrid to Montevideo, and then three-and-a-half weeks later a flight from Buenos Aires via Madrid to Berlin. As usual, I didn't have concrete plans aside from these flights, as my plan was to wing it more or less. I ended up spending an entire week in Uruguay, and the remaining time in Argentina, including two day trips into Brazil.
Concretely, I flew to Montevideo, but upon landing, I immediately took the bus to Punta del Este. I spent about two nights there, in pretty surroundings, until I decided to head to a city, taking the bus to Montevideo. When it was time to move on, I spent some time in pretty Colonia del Sacramento.
I then decided to leave Uruguay, by taking the ferry to cross the Rio de la Plata. This was a fascinating way to arrive in Buenos Aires, where I spent two nights. And then I took a flight to the northeast, to Puerto Iguazú. I spent some time here, visiting not only the famous Iguazu Falls, which straddles Brazil and Argentina, but also surrounding areas, such as the Itaipu Dam. While I was in this area, I did two day trips to Brazil.
And then I slowly made my way south, checking out cities along the Paraná River, such as Posadas, Corrientes, and Resistencia. And then, I finally took a flight back to Buenos Aires, to spend my last days before heading back to Berlin.
Water features quite prominently in this itinerary. I have been in urban areas next to rivers and waterfalls pretty much the whole time in this trip. It was fascinating, and absolutely fun. Of course, pictures will follow, so stay tuned.
