If though I've been here in Berlin for more than a decade, I still have plenty of places I haven't visited. One such place is the Altes Museum. I have been to the museums in the Museuminsel so many times, yet for some reason, I have skipped the Altes Museum. So one day, when I had a day off, I decided to check it out.
The Altes Museum is actually a very prominent building. If you're riding the buses that pass by on the street in front of it, you'll see it as a majestic building right next to the Berliner Dom.
In front of the museum is the massive Granite Bowl in Lustgarten. This granite bowl is noteworthy as it is the largest bowl carved out of a single stone in existence. It is almost 7 metres in diameter and weighs approximately 75 tonnes. The stone where it was carved out of is called the Great Margrave Stone, and interestingly enough, I saw its remains
back in 2019 when I was hiking in Brandenburg.
The collection consists of the Antiquities Collection, specimens from the Greek and Roman Age, and is extremely fascinating. There are plenty of ancient sculptures that were just very interesting to gaze at, which was what I did for a while.
At the very end of my tour, I visited the Rotunda, the central room of the museum. This is a round hall, adorned with plenty of sculptures positioned on pillars. After all, this is a Neoclassical building, so a rotunda is extremely appropriate here.
Overall, I was glad to have visited this place. Berlin has plenty of things to entertain the visitor, and I definitely think that this museum is one of them. Check it out if you have the chance.
