This one was quite smooth. I was actually surprised I finished it in a few days.
This book is essentially a diary of the author as he hiked along the Rhine. I picked up this book during the time I myself was hiking the Rhine, but in a separate area. The author, unlike me, hiked in Switzerland, where he went from Schaffhausen all the way to the source of the mighty river. And so I found it interesting to see the other aspects of the Rhine which I am not yet familiar with. Each stage of his hike was essentially a diary entry in this book, and so it felt like reading someone else's blog, similar to what I normally do when I hike. And another thing I found interesting was that this was written actually during Covid, so there are large aspects of this hiking blog that touched on the realities of being outdoors during the pandemic. Issues like wearing masks while in the train have been touched every now and then, giving me the impression that this stressful time was already a few years ago that people already published books about it.
I suppose I wished there were pictures. I would have loved to see what the scenery was like. I have been to Switzerland, but not substantially, given that the country is relatively expensive to travel into, and so I don't find Switzerland a very attractive place to extensively visit. In any case, perhaps this would be a teaser, and I would change my mind at some point. In any case, I found this book quite pleasant to read, and would also recommend it to readers who like to read about hiking. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.
