I had Saturday and Sunday to check out Wrocław. So after breakfast on Saturday, I immediately headed out to the Old Town, to check out this city. Of course, my main focus was Market Square, which is the central plaza of almost every Old Town of Polish cities.
I have to say, the Market Square of Wrocław is pretty. It's huge. There is a square, that is large enough to accommodate even a few city blocks within. And as the day progresses, this area becomes a very lively area, with plenty of people, all with their own gimmick.
Among the many items to be found in the Market Square, perhaps the first thing that caught my attention was the Monument of Alexander Fredro. I really don't know who he was, I had to look him up just now. Apparently he was a Polish writer during the Polish Romanticism, but only gained recognition after his death. This statue apparently originally was placed in Lviv, where he died, but was moved here in Wrocław after World War II.
As is typical of Polish market squares, there are very colourful buildings that line up its edges. And right in the middle, there is a fancy building, that has several establishments, including restaurants.
The Old Town Hall is just nearby, and is a very fascinating building. I unfortunately didn't have the time to check out its interior, as I prioritised exploring the city's exterior during this visit, but next time I definitely would like to see what is inside. It currently is a museum and can definitely be visited by the public.
At some point I headed towards the Cathedral Island. This is the oldest part of Wrocław. I learned that streetlights are still manually lit here, with a streetlighter turning them on every evening. This is the area where the cathedral is located, as is indicated by its name. Aside from the cathedral, there are several other interesting buildings in this area.
And then I slowly explored the numerous bridges that connect the various islands. Wrocław surprisingly has quite a large number of waterways: in fact, there was even the possibility to take a boat tour to see the city. I didn't go with this option, but in any case, I saw the city from its several bridges.
