I mentioned earlier this year that I am a late adopter when it comes to artificial intelligence. I suppose I am a late adopter when it comes to everything, whether it's smart phones, or any other technology. But once I adopt it, sometimes the adoption is quick. And this is also true when it comes to artificial intelligence. Nowadays, I've been using it to augment my pursuit of musical pleasure. And I have to say, I am pleased with the results!
I actually built two Gems that are musically relevant. In case you're not familiar, a Gem is what Google's Gemini calls a pre-defined bot. One can create a Gem and give it a purpose, a specific direction, and some information source, in addition to the Internet, of course. So for my own purposes, I built two musically-useful Gems: an Opera Analyst, as well as a Concert Advisor.
The Opera Analyst has the overall goal of providing me relevant information that I should know before I watch an opera or music theatre. It will provide a plot summary, a musical analysis, the piece's historical context, as well as a contextual analysis, in relation to the composer's other works, as well as against other works that appeared during its time. This bot is also knowledgeable about my own musical preferences: it knows which types of music I like versus ones that I didn't like. And it would consider this background information in order to provide me a recommendation on whether I should see this opera or not. If this is a piece that I would probably not like, it should also tell me why I should see it regardless, and what I should pay attention to, in order to appreciate it.
The other Gem I built is the Concert Advisor. I can present this Gem with a program of a concert, and its purpose is to advise me whether I would enjoy this concert or not, given my personal musical preferences. Given that the program typically is consisting of multiple pieces, it should provide a piece-by-piece recommendation and analysis. And the recommendation should ideally be quantitative, e.g. on a 10-point scale.
I have been playing around with these two Gems, and testing it against the previous shows and performances that I have seen, and I have to say the results are great! Somehow, now I have a way of articulating how I feel about these pieces, why I liked them, or why a piece didn't sit well with me. Of course, I would be using this extensively in the future, to have a better understanding on whether I would like a particular concert or performance I am contemplating on attending.
